The RARE Encounter

This is surprising news for Chicago 'L' railfans: CTA has managed to move several of the 1992-built 3200 Series railcars over to the Blue Line after 25 years of service! SRSLY! This changed Chicago transit history this week and it's brightening up the Blue Line life after some problems with the 2600 Series which is over 35 years old and built in 1981 to 1987. The Blue Line lost the 2200 Series rail cars in 2013 after retirement and then just have the 2600 Series running until it's retirement in the next decade. But then, it's quite boring for riders to keep experiencing this from time to time. And it's not as reliable. Womp-womp! So, the Chicago Transit Authority made a new plan as part of the schedule update for all 'L' lines and put the 3200 Series to the Blue Line subway at least until the 7000 Series continues delivery around 2020. Or if that's not working yet, they'll keep these until the decade after next. The 3200 Series was a next-newest rail unit from the Budd Company 2600's from the 80's. It was a part of that new 'L' service called the Orange Line in 1993 and it's upgrade to only color services across the city. About 300+ was delivered to the Orange, Brown and Yellow Lines. But the Yellow Line had a pantograph source on the top of the 3200's from 3444-3456 for overhead power until it was converted over to ground third-rail power in the 2000's. What's more, car #3458 was converted over to a 2600 unit after an incident that caused that car to collide. Now it's mismatched from the original to the mixed railcar. The original 2600 number was #3032 and changed it over to #3458 in the late 90's. Then in 2014 until late-2018, all of the 3200 Series rail cars will have upgraded equipment from top to bottom. You know, LED lights and signage, new motors, AC and wheel chassis. So, with that being said, this is THE rare encounter on the Blue Line for the first time this week since Monday morning.
